South Korean artist G-DRAGON has officially secured the trademark rights to his stage name from former agency YG Entertainment.

Just last week G-Dragon’s current agency GALAXY Corporation affirmed to news outlets that the artist has legally acquired the rights to trademarks ‘G-Dragon’ for future promotional activities.

Born Kwon Ji-Yong, the artist debuted as a part of the South Korean boy band BIGBANG in 2006 under the moniker G-Dragon. BIGBANG produced numerous hit songs, such as ‘Fantastic Baby’, ‘Haru Haru’ and ‘Bad Boy’ which elevated the group’s profile in South Korea and internationally.

Since BIGBANG’s success, Kwon’s moniker became vital to his identity as a celebrity. The artist has managed to branch out from group activities to releasing solo music and becoming an influence in the fashion industry under the stage name ‘G-Dragon’.

The move to procure trademark rights points to the significant reputation and identity that comes under ‘G-Dragon’ as a stage name for Kwon.

Trademark rights to other stage names related to the artist, namely ‘GD’, has also been secured and transferred from YG Entertainment. It is reported YG Entertainment transferred the rights to both trademarks at no compensation cost to G-Dragon or GALAXY Corporation.

This news comes after G-Dragon’s comeback announcement earlier in the year. The artist is preparing to release new music alongside carrying out global activities after a long hiatus since his last solo album in 2017.

Stage names are crucial parts of an artist’s reputation and identity. Trademarking provides the artist the exclusive rights to use, produce, distribute and sell all types of artistic work under the trademarked name. This allows the artist to have full control over their image, and also stops others from profiting under their name.
