French footballer Kylian Mbappé has filed a trademark for his iconic celebratory pose in several countries including the European Union.
Cited as one of the highest paid footballers in the world, Mbappé has not only trademarked his signature pose, but has also sought protection for his name, initials and phrases related to himself.
Initials and quotes to be protected by Mbappé include ‘KM’ and ‘Moi, tu m’parles pas d’âge.’
Mbappé’s celebratory pose
Mbappé is well known for folding his arms with his hands tucked under his armpits whenever he scores a goal. This trademark celebration gained prominence around the world as the footballet’s star rose with fans worldwide mimicking Mbappé’s iconic pose at games.
The pose is even featured in video game FIFA as a representative to Mbappé, who featured as the ambassador for the game in 2021 and becoming the youngest player ever to do so.
After several successful seasons at his previous French club Paris Saint Germain, Mbappé became regarded as one of the best football players in his generation. The French footballer’s decision to protect his intellectual property rights comes before his debut on the pitch as a Real Madrid player.
As Mbappé’s reputation and recognition rises along the progression of his career, it is no surprise he has made the move to protect his brand and image.
Mbappé is not the only athlete who has sought trademark protection for their iconic celebratory poses. Track and field superstar Usain Bolt has also previously filed a trademark for his signature ‘lightning pose’ with USPTO.
Goods to be protected under Mbappé’s trademark include clothes, footwear, video games, toiletries and textiles. Any entities looking to utilize Mbappé’s trademark will be required to license said trademark from Mbappé himself.
