Career

Mr. Tan Sin Su is the National Secretary General of the SME Association of Malaysia.

Mr. Tan Sin Su has 38 years of working experience in a wide range of disciplines including engineering design, marketing, corporate planning, corporate finance and IP advisory works. He was also a part-time lecturer on the Executive MBA programme of his alma mater, University of Malaya, in the early nineties.

Mr. Tan Sin Su started his career as a plant design engineer with the world’s largest electrical engineering group at the time, ASEA, who are now formally known as ABB. He was one of the two pioneering engineers from Malaysia seconded to ASEA’s South East Asia Regional Engineering Centre when it was established in 1981. He was also the first Malaysian to undertake the schematic and detailed designs for the control and relay protection schemes of an entire substation at 132 kV level.

Mr. Tan Sin Su moved on to corporate finance in 1988, conducting feasibility studies, valuation of companies and handling acquisition and merger works, where he liaised with investment bankers and relevant authorities such as CIC (Capital Issues Committee predecessor of Securities Commission), FIC (Foreign Investment Committee) and KLSE (Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange predecessor of Bursa Malaysia).

Right now, Mr. Tan Sin Su focuses substantially on IP related works such as registration of patents, trademarks, industrial designs, valuation of IP assets and provides advisory services for foreign direct investments in Malaysia. Mr. Tan was the Working Committee Chairman of National SMEs IP Awareness Programme 2002, a programme under the auspices of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTCA), Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and SME Association of Malaysia.

Mr. Tan Sin Su has been a regular speaker on IP related subjects including a seminar organised by Japan Patent Office in Malaysia in 2006 and a seminar organised by Asia Business Forum on Valuation of Intellectual Property. Mr. Tan had appeared as an expert witness in three patent litigation cases before the High Court of Malaya.
