China has accumulated 378,000 effective artificial intelligence (AI) invention patents with a year-over-year growth rate exceeding 40%, according to data released by the country’s leading intellectual property regulator.
The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) reports the growth rate as 1.4 times higher than the global average of inventions patented.
Within the field of generative AI patents, China remains to steer ahead of the competition as the country filed more than 38,000 patents from 2014 to 2023, accounting for 70% of the generative AI patents filed globally within the last decade.
According to World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the top companies holding generative AI patents in China include Tencent Holdings (2,074), Ping An Insurance Group (1,564), Baidu (1,234), Alibaba (571), Bytedance (418) and more.
China’s AI patent landscape reflects a strong innovative culture within the country’s digital economy. In 2023, the digital economy industry accounted for 10% of China’s GDP.
In the previous year, a total of 406,000 invention patents within China’s digital economy was approved, reflecting 45% of the total number of approved invention patents in the country.
As reported by Ge Shu, a senior CNIPA official, the average annual growth rate for China’s digital economy is positioned at 21% over the past five years. Ge noted a 31,000 increase of domestic companies obtaining invention patents involving the digital economy in 2023. Ge also reported a total of 93 countries or regions holding invention patents within the digital economy in China, citing a dynamic and innovative technological landscape in China’s digital economy.
